overheard at work

guy 1: so what’s the difference between .org and .com?

guy 2: I dunno, I think they’re running out of .com’s and giving out .org’s.

guy 1: yeah, I’m seeing a lot of .org’s now… I don’t even know what .org stands for

guy 2: *walks off*

guy 3: and now you see www2

guy 1: yeah, and www3 and www4, 5, 6, 7…. It’s like area codes. Before you know it they’ll be out of these too….

guy 3: yeah.

This is what I have to deal with at work. 9 out of 10 people have no idea what I do here. I honestly have no idea if this is good or bad. All I know is that the things I overhear are pretty funny. Talk about things losing meaning. I had no idea that it was so unknown to go from org to ORGanization or from com to COMmercial.

  1. sadly, i have to admit to not knowing that .com was for commercial. /me hides in shame =)

actually, i’d never really thought about it before. but ORGanization is pretty obvious.

  2. For those who need more information… that’s what the site http://www.whitehouse.com/ isn’t a governmental site. You have to go to http://www.whitehouse.gov/ in order to get the government’s site. But be forewarned… whitehouse.com is one of the internet business’s that have always claimed to be profitable on the ‘net… or in l33t, if I get it right, it’s pr0n site.

  3. *pats angel on back*

I guess maybe it isn’t common knowledge. I just got a laugh out of it at work today. (:

  4. This is off topic, but Dave, could you help set me up with comment system like you’ve done with others?

To keep on topic, I knew those extensions, but what does ‘.net’ mean? Just net? network? internet? fishing net?

  5. .net is for network, you were right. It’s meant for things that are network centric, and don’t make as much sense outside of the network such as ISP’s, programming groups and the like.

Yeah, I can help you get some comments Keith. I didn’t know you had a blog. Actually, Melinda got Josh to set her’s up but they’re broken at the moment. I’ll have to see if I can see what’s up with that first.

Once I get Melinda cleared up, I can do the server side setup. Then I would recommend having Josh S. help you with the part on your end. Would that work for you?
