Winds of Change

Well, I’ve made some upgrades to das piggenstein. First off, I upgraded Moveable Type to version 2.661. This allowed me to install the excellent MT-Blacklist plugin.

This should virtually eliminate the comment spam that has been plaguing my blog as well as Soulfood’s and Naginata’s. It works by disallowing any comment with a URL in it that matches any of the strings or regexs in my blacklist. I’m using a very standard blacklist. Careful though, there is a lot of obnoxious stuff in that list. Caveat Lector, or whatnot.

If anyone continues to get blogspam at a blog, let me know so that we can tune the blacklist.

  1. Cool! Now I know how to fix my blog. Thanks, Dave.

  2. glad to be of help Charles. And let me tell you, MT-blacklist has already blocked 11 different unsavory blogspams. I love it. (:

  3. That list is too funny. I gotta get me one of those. My MT has been getting some spam lately, those punks.

  4. Thank-you thank-you thank-you x 1000.

  5. Forgive me for asking, but how do i install/setup this plugin for my movable type? I’m new to setting up any plugins and jayallen’s website doesn’t give clear instructions on how to do it. I’ve tried looking at as well but i’m still lost.

When i downloaded the blacklist .zip file I found it had one .pl file and a few .pm files. what the heck are they? i put them all in my plugins folder and I don’t know what to do now.

I’M SO FRUSTRATED! please point me in the right direction.

  6. David, no problem. If you look here there are some very simple instructions for installing MT-Blacklist. It’s basically just a few file copies.

If you have any specific questions beyond what the installation instructions cover, please ask though. I’m more than willing to help.

  7. Thanks, Dave! That was all i needed. If you have any other plugins you recommend, please do share it with us.

I know paulo over at has a plugin that turns off comments after a certain time posted, which reduces the spam even more. I’ve found that most of the spam on my site is placed on posts that were older than a month. So maybe that could help ya out too.

    Anyways, thanks again.
