Thars oil in them thar heatsinks

Check out this computer that is completely submerged in vegetable oil. Haven’t really seen a silent PC hack that cool in a while. Apparently the fans still spin, even in the oil. What’s more amazing is that the system has been running that way for about a year and a half, according to the page author.

Very cool. Link via hack a day.

  1. I’ve seen it done with mineral oil, but…eeew. One thing about those fans: they aren’t going to seize up. You could probably get better performance by trimming the blades down.

Put a dual Opteron in there and you could make doughnuts!

  2. Sounds like an experiment trying to relive the coolness that is the Cray-2.

  3. Schickes Idee! I’m all for new uses for ADM vegetable oil.

The only logistical obstacle I don’t see a good way around is when you want to upgrade or switch something out. What a mess!

  4. I think mineral oil would be a better way to go.

If you want to cool your computer for $15 then an aquarium and some veg oil is the way to go.

I want to see some left over chicken wings in there.

  5. Why do you think that mineral oil would be better?

Personally, I could see the vegetable oil smelling a little funny, but if you just sealed the fish tank, problem solved. On the other hand, I don’t know if the oil is relying on the atmosphere to cool itself, or if the thermal conduction through the glass to the air outside is sufficient.

Either way, as impractical as this hack is, it’s still fairly cool. I would be tempted to do it to a server system, just to test it out for longevity.
